Bride Spotlight: The Dress She Never Thought She’d Choose

A last-minute appointment, a 240-mile journey and a wedding dress completely different from what she had imagined.

Meet one of our beautiful Dotty Brides and discover how trusting the process led her to the one.

Sometimes, the dress you end up falling in love with is the complete opposite of the dress you thought you were looking for.

That was certainly the case for this Dotty Bride.

Originally from the North East but now living in West Sussex, she had planned to make the most of a visit home by booking appointments at a few bridal boutiques in the area. Then, after discovering Dotty Bridal on Instagram, she knew she had to make the journey to see us too; despite living around 240 miles away.

With less than 48 hours' notice, she managed to secure a last-minute appointment.

And it turned out to be the only appointment she needed.

From Pinterest Inspiration to Something Completely Different

For years, she had pictured herself in a very particular kind of wedding dress.

Lace. Long sleeves. A high neckline.

Those were the details filling her Pinterest boards and the style she had always imagined walking down the aisle in. More than that, they were details she felt would make her comfortable and confident on her wedding day.

So, when she arrived at Dotty, she had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted.

Or so she thought.

Her first appointment was at our original Holmfirth store, meaning she was able to experience a little piece of Dotty history, from the smaller boutique to the much-loved store we have today.

Her stylist Becky quickly became a huge part of her experience.

Rather than pushing her towards a particular style, Becky listened to what she wanted, encouraged her to try the dresses she had always imagined herself wearing and, importantly, was honest when something wasn't quite right.

“I expected the appointments to be pushy and sales led, which couldn't have been further from the truth.”

That honesty would prove to be a very important part of her journey.

The Moment Everything Changed

After trying five or six dresses, it became clear that the styles she had always imagined weren't quite working for her.

The dresses weren't wrong; they simply weren't her.

That's when Becky suggested trying something completely different.

A simple dress with a low plunge neckline, nothing covering the arms and a silhouette that was worlds away from the lace, long-sleeved gown she had originally envisioned.

Her first thought was that Becky had gone slightly mad.

But she trusted her.

And the moment she stepped into the dress, everything changed.

Her waist felt beautifully defined, she loved the way the dress made her feel about her figure and, perhaps most importantly, she wasn't conscious of the areas she had always worried about.

“I could have cried happy tears.”

There was just one thing missing.

Although she loved the way the dress made her feel, she wondered if it was a little too plain.

So, Becky added a bow to the back.

And that was it.

She had found her dress.

Saying Yes to the Dress

Finding her wedding dress at Dotty was emotional for more reasons than one.

She hadn't expected to find the one so quickly, especially at the first boutique she visited, and certainly not in a style so far removed from everything she thought she wanted.

As a plus-size bride, she had always assumed that she might have to compromise, choosing the best option available and hoping to feel as good as possible in it.

Instead, she found a dress that completely changed that mindset.

“Being plus sized I'd always assumed I would have to 'make do' with the best option for me and feel 'the best I could', but this dress completely wow'd me.”

After saying yes, she cancelled the rest of her bridal appointments that weekend.

There was no need to keep looking.

She was also lucky enough to return to Dotty the following day with her bridesmaid, who hadn't been able to attend the original last-minute appointment, giving her the chance to try her dress on again and share that special moment together.

A March Wedding at Le Petit Chateau

The couple went on to celebrate their wedding at Le Petit Chateau in Northumberland, surrounded by family, friends and plenty of personal touches that reflected their story.

Despite a March wedding, the couple were incredibly lucky with the weather, enjoying beautiful sunshine and a surprisingly warm day. The venue's gardens provided the perfect setting for their drinks reception, and the bride couldn't speak highly enough of the team at Le Petit Chateau.

From getting ready and putting her dress on, to her first looks with her Mam and Dad, walking down the aisle and seeing everyone they loved together in one room, the day was filled with those moments that stay with you.

And, of course, there were plenty of compliments on the dress.

A Bow, A Veil & A Nod to Formula 1

The finishing touches to the bridal look were just as personal as the dress itself.

Adele The Dress Fitter created the bow for the back of the gown, as well as the bride's embroidered veil.

The couple met at a race track, and with her partner's family running their own motorsport team, Formula 1 and motorsport naturally became a subtle theme throughout the wedding.

The bride's veil was embroidered with “Lights out and away we go”, a nod to the famous words associated with the start of an F1 race.

The details continued throughout the day, with one of her husband's historic race cars making an appearance for photographs, table names inspired by circuits they had visited and raced at, and race numbers and initials embroidered into the men's suits.

Even the bride's vows to James included references to their shared love of motorsport.

It was a beautiful example of how personal details don't have to take over a wedding to make it feel completely yours.

A Fragrance Full of Memories

There was also a little piece of Dotty that followed her into her wedding day.

From her first visit to the boutique, she had loved the Dotty scent, and receiving the candle in her Yes to the Dress box made it even more closely connected to the memories of finding her gown.

So, when Dotty perfume was introduced, she knew she had to make it her wedding day fragrance.

Now, every time she wears the scent, it brings her straight back to the beginning of her bridal journey.

Into the Evening

The celebrations continued into the evening with a saxophonist joining the DJ, keeping the dance floor busy throughout the night.

And then came the shot trolley.

The bride and James brought it out themselves, serving Baby Guinness shots to their guests with a very enthusiastic “Shots, shots, shots!”

A pretty perfect way to keep the party going.

Her Advice to Future Dotty Brides

If there's one thing this bride would encourage other brides to do, it's to keep an open mind.

The dress you save to Pinterest, the neckline you think you'll love or the silhouette you have always imagined yourself wearing might not necessarily be the one that makes you feel your best.

Her advice is simple: trust your stylist.

“Fully put your trust into the Dotty girls and they will help find the style that's right for you.”

And for any plus-size brides feeling nervous about their appointment, her experience is a reminder that you don't need to arrive at your appointment already knowing what will work for you.

“I honestly felt the best I've ever felt, no wedding diet or anything, thanks to how at ease the Dotty team made me feel and how seamless the process was.”

From a last-minute appointment and a 240-mile journey, to a dress she never imagined choosing, her Dotty story is a perfect reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is forget everything you thought you knew about your dream dress; and simply see how you feel.
